Buy the JOOLA Perseus Pro IV 16mm unless you specifically want the Hyperion's curved head and the 3S line's bouncier, power-first feel. It is certified for both USA Pickleball (PBCoR .43) and UPA-A play, its TechFlex Power foam makes it the more forgiving build, and JOOLA's own store lists it at about $149.95 against about $199.95 for the Hyperion 3S Dual 16mm (checked October 2026).
This comparison is built from JOOLA's product pages and blog, USA Pickleball's approved-paddle list, a Pickleball Central listing and reviews published by The Kitchen, rather than first-hand use.
- Perseus Pro IV 16mm: the safer all-round buy, dual-certified, cheaper at JOOLA right now, and judged more forgiving than the 3S by The Kitchen's reviewer.
- Hyperion 3S 16mm: the pick for drivers and counter-punchers who want JOOLA's rawest power feel, provided you buy the "Dual" version for USA Pickleball-sanctioned events.
For the Perseus Pro IV 16mm: Check price on Amazon. This page has no Amazon link for the Hyperion 3S, because the JOOLA 3S listing there showed Perseus, Magnus and Scorpeus options but no Hyperion when checked in October 2026; buy it from JOOLA or an authorized retailer instead.
Two different paddles are sold as "Hyperion 3S 16"
JOOLA released the 3S line in the summer of 2024, and at first it carried UPA-A certification only, according to The Kitchen. Pickleball Central's listing for the original Ben Johns Hyperion 3S 16mm still reads "UPA-A Approved (Not USAP Approved at this time)" and says it is not eligible for USA Pickleball sanctioned events.
JOOLA's current version is the Hyperion 3S Dual 16mm. JOOLA says the "Dual" label means it meets both UPA-A and USAP PBCoR .43 standards, and The Kitchen notes that the re-release lets amateurs use the 3S at PPA Tour, MLP and USAP-sanctioned events alike. USA Pickleball's own list backs this up: a search of JOOLA's 3S models returns only "Dual" entries, among them the Hyperion 3S Dual 16mm (checked October 2026).
That split matters in two ways:
- Rules. An original 3S cannot be used in a USA Pickleball-sanctioned tournament. If that could ever apply to you, check that the listing says "3S Dual" and find the model on the approved list before paying. Our USA Pickleball approval explainer covers how that list works.
- Price. The original is the cheaper paddle. Pickleball Central lists it at $119.95, down from $259.99, while JOOLA sells the 3S Dual for $199.95 (checked October 2026).
The Perseus Pro IV sidesteps the problem: JOOLA's product page says the Perseus Pro IV 16mm "is UPA-A pro certified and USAP PBCoR .43 certified." One caution from The Kitchen's launch review is that JOOLA also planned a UPA-only Pro IV with more grit on the face, so confirm that any listing you buy from names both certifications.

On paper the two frames share the same outline and handle. What separates them is the core construction, the head shape, the rules status and the price.
Where the two paddles really differ
Propulsion Core vs TechFlex Power
Both paddles come from the same core family. The Kitchen's Perseus Pro IV review says "the rest of the core is similar to JOOLA's 3S paddles," and that the main change is "an added section of high-density foam inside the bottom corners/throat area of the paddle." JOOLA calls this TechFlex Power: foam placed "outside the paddle frame but under the edge guard," which JOOLA says expands the sweet spot and adds a poppier feel on drives.
The 3S keeps the older recipe. Pickleball Central describes its 16mm Propulsion Core as a honeycomb suspended "within a foam perimeter so that it can move separately," producing "a smooth and controllable trampolining effect" in place of the Gen 3's extreme pop. That description is of the original 3S; for the newer version, JOOLA says the Hyperion 3S Dual "features a new and improved core paired with JOOLA's proven Propulsion Core technology." JOOLA's own 2026 copy calls the 3S Dual its line for "players seeking ultimate power," with "the most expressive, raw power feel in the JOOLA lineup."
Feel, power and forgiveness
JOOLA now pitches the two lines at opposite ends: the Pro IV is "built for players seeking complete control," and the 3S Dual is the power option. Third-party accounts mostly agree, with one dissent noted below. Two caveats apply to The Kitchen's comparisons below: they were made in the Perseus shape, and against the original 3S, before JOOLA released the dual-certified version with its revised core. JOOLA says Propulsion Core still gives every 3S Dual paddle its feel, the Hyperion included, so read them as a guide rather than a measurement of the Dual.
- Forgiveness. The Kitchen found both Pro IV thicknesses "more plush and forgiving than their 3S counterparts" and called the paddle "a definite upgrade from the 3S."
- Drives. The same review reported slightly more power on serves and third-shot drives than the 3S, not less.
- Blocks and resets. The reviewer found it easy to absorb pace with the 16mm Pro IV, whereas with the 3S the ball "could sometimes feel too bouncy off the face."
- Pop. The counterpoint comes from JOOLA pro Tyson McGuffin, who stayed with the 3S: "I feel like the 3S gave me more pop than the PRO IV."
Read together, the Pro IV keeps drive power while making soft shots easier to control, and the 3S trades some of that control for a livelier, bouncier response in fast exchanges.
Aero-curve head vs rounded corners
JOOLA says the Hyperion "uses an aero-curve shape for a more fluid feel," and The Kitchen describes the Hyperion 3S Dual's "curved top edge designed for more maneuverability." The Perseus has "rounded upper corners and an elongated profile to keep the sweet spot centered while extending reach," according to JOOLA's Pro IV page. JOOLA's wording is not consistent (its 3S page calls the Perseus "a standard body"), but both spec blocks list the same outline.
The Kitchen lists the Perseus Pro IV's swingweight at 116 to 118 on average. No source this page could verify publishes a swingweight for the Hyperion 3S Dual, so none is printed here. If hand speed at the kitchen is your priority, our swing weight explainer shows what that number tells you.
Price and value in October 2026
On JOOLA's own store the newer paddle is the cheaper one: the Perseus Pro IV 16mm is listed at $149.95, marked down from $249.95, while the Hyperion 3S Dual 16mm sits at $199.95 (checked October 2026).
The warranty also favors the Pro IV on paper. JOOLA's page gives it 12 months with registration, against "6–12 months" for the Hyperion 3S Dual.
If you like the Hyperion head but want Pro IV construction, JOOLA also makes a Hyperion Pro IV 16mm, and Amazon's Pro IV listing includes a Hyperion 16mm option next to the Perseus: Check price on Amazon.
Who should buy which
Buy the Perseus Pro IV 16mm if you:
- play, or might play, USA Pickleball-sanctioned events and want one paddle for everything;
- win more points with blocks, resets and dinks than with put-aways; The Kitchen suggests the 16mm suits someone who "prefers to block/reset drives and attacks rather than counterpunch";
- want the lower price at JOOLA right now.
Buy the Hyperion 3S 16mm if you:
- drive and counter from everywhere and want the liveliest, most pop-heavy feel of the two;
- prefer a curved, aero head for whip through the hitting zone;
- will buy the 3S Dual, or accept that an original 3S is limited to UPA-A play.
If the 16mm Pro IV feels too calm, JOOLA says the 14mm gives "a faster, poppier response for players who like to drive and speed up." Our 16mm vs 14mm guide explains that trade-off, and you can see our full shortlist for other paddles in this class.
FAQ
Is the JOOLA Hyperion 3S 16mm legal for USA Pickleball tournaments?
Only the 3S Dual version is. Pickleball Central's listing for the original Hyperion 3S 16mm marks it UPA-A approved and not USAP approved, and USA Pickleball's list shows the Hyperion 3S Dual 16mm instead (checked October 2026).
Is the Perseus Pro IV better than the 3S?
For most players, yes. The Kitchen called it "a definite upgrade from the 3S," mainly for forgiveness and control, with slightly more power on drives. Players who live on pop, such as JOOLA pro Tyson McGuffin, still prefer the 3S.
Do the Hyperion 3S and Perseus Pro IV have the same dimensions?
Yes, on paper. JOOLA lists both at 16.5 by 7.5 inches with a 5.5-inch grip. The Hyperion's curved top edge and the Perseus's rounded upper corners change how the head moves through the air and where the hitting area sits.
Is the newer Perseus Pro IV really cheaper than the Hyperion 3S Dual?
On JOOLA's store, yes: the Pro IV 16mm is marked down to $149.95 from $249.95, while the 3S Dual 16mm is $199.95 with no markdown shown (checked October 2026). Third-party prices move, so check before you buy.
